One of the earliest newspaper clippings mentioning the Los Nietos School District, from the August 18, 1871, edition of the Los Angeles Star newspaper.
The Los Nietos School District was established as a school district under the laws of the State of California on August 12, 1861, the first school district so organized in Los Angeles County. It was also the third district organized in California, following the San Francisco School District (1851) and the Sacramento School District (1854). At the beginning, Los Nietos School District consisted of a single small adobe schoolhouse, located near what is now Norwalk Boulevard and Los Nietos Road in Santa Fe Springs.
In 1879-1880, the district replaced their adobe schoolhouse with a newly constructed two-story framed structure (presumably mentioned in the clipping imaged above). That schoolhouse continued to serve the district until 1924.
Presently, the district, now named Los Nietos Elementary School District, oversees three elementary schools (grades K-6) and one middle school (grades 7-8). The district enrolled 1,210 students in the 2024-2025 school year, where 94% of students were Hispanic.
