RESCUE: Emergency Services Detail
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Services Detail (ESD) (under the Special Operations Bureau) was created more than 30 years ago for the purpose of dealing with difficult and dangerous search and rescue operations in Los Angeles County. ESD is the department’s tactical paramedics and rescue-recovery specialists. The Detail’s members are special weapons team members and are trained and certified in SWAT operations, rural-mountain rescue, ocean-swift water rescue, helicopter-based rescue, and public safety diving. Detail team members are also licensed paramedics and able to deliver advanced life support care in any austere environments they may face. ESD also maintains a roster of supporting expertise with instructor level certifications, to train its team and outside agencies. Specialized training includes combat medical, combat technical rescue, confined space rescue and recovery, tactical HAZMAT, and advanced underwater recovery operations. ESD also serves as an asset for FEMA and has been called upon for its expertise and experience across the state and nation for natural disasters. Emergency Services Detail members must have a high degree of tactical experience and must have served with Los Angeles County Sheriff Special Weapons Teams..
