In May 2000, veteran actor Kirk Douglas became the first living person in Los Angeles to have a high school named for him. West Granada High School was renamed Kirk Douglas High School.

Largest PRIVATE High Schools (Grade 9-12)

Established in 1865 and becoming a Jesuit institution in 1911, Loyola High School is the oldest continuously-run educational institution in Southern California.


In 1889, Mary Caswell, a young, widowed single-parent from Maine, founded Marlborough School within two months after her move to Los Angeles. It was originally named St. Margaret's School for Girls. It is the oldest independent girls' school in Southern California.
