Once Upon a Time Bookstore was opened in Montrose in 1966 by Jane Humphrey. By 1980, her store was widely believed to be the oldest surviving children’s bookstore in the country. In 2003, Humphrey announced her retirement, causing two young sisters to fret over the loss of their favorite source for Harry Potter novels. For their sake, their mother, Maureen Palacios, decided to enter the bookselling business herself and bought the bookstore. In 2008, Publisher’s Weekly verified that the bookstore was the nation’s oldest children’s bookstore.
