Named after the post office about 1890 that was named after the land grant La Canada (Spanish for valley or glen). U.S. Senator Frank Putnam Flint (a monument is dedicated to him outside Los Angeles City Hall for his role in obtaining federal support for L.A.'s water needs) selected the final name when the land was subdivided in 1920.
