Francisco Bravo rose from migrant poverty in the farmlands of Ventura County to graduate from the USC School of Pharmacy, then later, in 1936, graduate from Stanford University School of Medicine. Returning to his roots in East Los Angeles, Bravo established the Bravo Clinic in 1938 on Soto Street in Boyle Heights to treat illnesses, perform surgeries, and deliver babies for Latino families. He also established a scholarship fund to help young Latinos pursue a medical education. Bravo served in the military in the Pacific in World War II and, years later, served as the first Latino on the Los Angeles Police Commission. He was also appointed by then California Governor Ronald Reagan to the California Board of Agriculture. After his death in 1990, the Los Angeles Unified School District named its medical magnet high school Bravo Medical Magnet High School in his honor.
