Projected Population by Race & Ethnicity for Los Angeles County

Between the 2020 Census count and population projections for 2060, Los Angeles County is projected to lose 17 percent of its population, or 1.7 million people. That would like losing about 44 percent of the entire population of the city of Los Angeles. The loss of 1.7 million people would also be like losing all the combined populations of Long Beach, Santa Clarita, Glendale, Lancaster, Palmdale, Pomona, Torrance, Pasadena and Downey. The single largest projected loss among the county’s racial/ethnic groups is more than 750,000 Hispanic/Latino people, or 16 percent of today’s Hispanic/Latino population. Following would be more than 450,000 White, non-Hispanic people, or 18 percent of that population today. The third largest loss would be more than 228,000 Asian, non-Hispanic people, or 15 percent of that population today.

Along with the entire county population, no single racial/ethnic group is currently projected to grow between 2020 and 2060. It should be noted that these projections do change when periodically updated, sometimes dramatically.

Projected Populations for Southern California Counties

Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, among a number of other Southern California counties listed here, are the only two projected to lose population by 2060. One perspective blames this primarily on rising housing costs, although this doesn't appear to impact other expensive counties such as Orange, San Diego and Santa Barbara. Again, it should be noted that these projections do change when periodically updated, sometimes dramatically.
