The establishment of the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission in 1976 and the Los Angeles County Probation Oversight Commission in 2020 were the first of their kind in the United States.
Aviation Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors regarding the operation and development of the County's five-airport system (included are Brackett Field Airport in La Verne, Compton/Woodley Airport in Compton, San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte, General William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster, and Whiteman Airport in Pacoima). |
Beach Commission | Reviews Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors policies, capital projects and contracts as related to the County-operated beaches. |
Business License Commission | Provides business licensing for all unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County as well as for contract cities such as Malibu, Santa Clarita and Westlake Village. Responsibilities include investigating and taking action on matters connected with the public health, safety and welfare of county residents. Also encourages the formation of new and private charities and licenses and regulates enterprises of philanthropic nature. |
Child and Families, Commission for | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on child and family service delivery systems and enhancing partnerships to create safer and more secure futures for the county’s at-risk children and their families. |
Citizen's Economy and Efficiency Commission, Citizens | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on all aspects of local government policy, management, and operations for the purpose of improving the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of local government. |
Civil Service Commission | Charter-mandated body charged with acting as the appellate body for major disciplinary actions, discharges, reductions, suspensions in excess of five days, and discrimination complaints filed by County employees within the Civil Service System. Also hears appeals of scored portions of examinations. Additionally, serves as the administrative appeals body for cities that directly contract with the County of Los Angeles. |
Civilian Oversight Commission | Improve public transparency and accountability with respect to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. |
Disabilities, Commission on | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on a range of issues affecting the lives of people with disabilities and of actions that can be taken to achieve a barrier-free County where people with disabilities have equal access to programs and services. |
Employee Relations Commission | Regulates labor relations in Los Angeles County. Focuses upon the establishment of bargaining units, the conduct of elections for certification and decertification of unions, and the investigation and hearing of unfair labor practice charges filed by employees, unions, and departments. |
Fish and Wildlife Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Fish and Wildlife Warden regarding the propagation and protection of fish and wildlife in Los Angeles County and the State of California. |
HIV, Commission on | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on HIV-related matters. |
Highway Safety Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and serves as an appeal board for members of the community to appeal decisions made by the Department of Public Works regarding their requests for traffic control measures or for school crossing guards. |
Historic Landmarks & Records Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on promotinge, preserving and protecting Los Angeles County’s architectural resources. |
Human Relations, Commission on | Promotes better human relations in Los Angeles County by working to transform prejudice into acceptance, inequity into justice, and hostility into peace. |
Insurance, Commission on | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors of significant developments, court cases, and the status of pending legislation concerning consumer insurance matters. |
Local Agency Formation Commission | Independent public agency with county-wide jurisdiction over the boundaries of cities and certain special districts within Los Angeles County. Its jurisdiction involves proposed boundary changes to local government boundaries involving the formation, dissolution, and expansion of cities and special districts. |
Local Government Services Commission | Seeks to find means to improve services, eliminate redundancies among public service providers, and identify areas where economies of scale can be achieved while providing better responsiveness to citizen needs. Advises government leaders in the County of Los Angeles on ways to provide better, more responsible and cost effective delivery of services. |
Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission | Established by a Joint Powers Agreement between the City of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles, and the California Science Center (State of California), oversees management of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum property. |
Mental Health Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Department of Mental Health regarding any aspects of the local mental health programs. |
Native American Indian Commission, Los Angeles City/County | Promote the acquisition and application of funding resources to the socioeconomic problems of American Indians in Los Angeles City and County without duplication of any service or activity provided by any other County officer or department. |
Older Adults, Commission for | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors regarding issues, conditions and needs that face senior persons of Los Angeles County and make recommendations as to how adverse conditions might be remedied. |
Probation Oversight Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Probation Department and monitors the Probation Department’s progress on systemic reform. |
Public Health Commission | Provides critical feedback on the delivery of public health services to all cities and unincorporated areas in Los Angeles County as well as the management and response to emerging public health issues. |
Public Social Services Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Director of Public Social Services on matters relating to the provision of public social services. |
Quality and Productivity Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on the quality of services provided to the residents of the County, as well as the productive delivery of those services. Introduces private sector expertise. |
Regional Planning Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on all planning matters and administers the provisions of the State Planning Law, the State Subdivision Map Act, CEQA, and county ordinances affecting planning. |
Small Business Commission | Advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to help businesses grow and do business with Los Angeles County. |
Sybil Brand Commission | Inspects and evaluates jails, lockups, probation and correctional facilities in the Los Angeles County. |
Women, Commission for | Represents the special interests and concerns of women of all races, ethnic and social backgrounds, religious convictions, sexual orientation and social circumstances. |
Youth Commission | Youth-led organization that advises the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and promotes youth participation in County affairs and policy development. |
