According to reports for calendar years 2017-2019 from the City of Los Angeles Animal Services, an average of 54,666 animals were annually impounded, including dogs, cats, rabbits, reptiles, birds, livestock, and other animals, both domesticated and wild. The largest share were dogs, at 43 percent. About 80 percent of impounded animals were adopted, placed, returned, or released. About 13 percent were euthanized.

The County of Los Angeles Animal Care and Control, reports by fiscal year, rather than calendar year. Its reports for three fiscal years, 2017-2018 through 2019-2020, show that it impounded an average of 56,265 animals during each of those years. Although dogs impounded by the county were close to the same proportion (41 percent) as for L.A.’s agency, cats were the largest percentage (46 percent) of the county's impounds. The county also adopted, placed, returned, or released a lower percentage of their animals, at only 63 percent. In addition, 34 percent of animals were euthanized by the county, a larger percentage than by the L.A. agency. The county’s euthanization rate, however, is still considerably less than that of almost a decade ago. During the 2012-2013 period, the county euthanized 51 percent of impounded animals. The City of L.A. then euthanized 31 percent.

One of the latest animal shelters in Los Angeles County is the $4.3 million facility opened in 2014 for the Pasadena Humane Society. It is considered one of the best in the country. In addition to a few new additions, the shelter is actually a renovation of the historical building that the society has occupied since the 1930s.

In 2015, the Pasadena Humane Society opened the $3 million Neely Cat Center to provide shelter for up to 200 cats with emergency needs, a special area for feral cats and a protective area for kittens too young for adoption. The facility was funded by the William R. Payden Philanthropic Trust. The center's name commemorates Neely, William Payden’s Siamese cat for 18 years.
