Metrolink is operated by AMTRAK under contract with the Southern California Regional Rail Authority. The line operates 39 low-emission GM EMD locomotives and 155 double-deck passenger cars built by UTDC/Bombardier of Canada. In 1992, Metrolink purchased 338 miles of right-of-way track from the former Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway (now Burlington Northern), though the freight railway retains trackage rights.
