Los
Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)
The
Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is the primary
provider of transit services for the Southern California region. It was created
by the state Assembly in May 1992, merging the former Los Angeles County
Transportation Commission and the Southern California Rapid Transit District (RTD).
The merger became effective on April 1, 1993. MTA is governed by a 13-member
board comprised of the five Los Angeles County Supervisors, the Mayor of the
City of Los Angeles, three appointees by the Los Angeles Mayor and four city
council members representing the League of Cities in Los Angeles County. The
Governor also appoints one non-voting member to the board. MTA oversees all
regional bus and rail operations, planning and construction of the county-wide
rail system, transportation policy and planning, programming of federal, state
and local transportation funds and coordination of transportation agencies
operating within the county.
