African-American Firsts in Los Angeles Professional Football UCLAs Kenny Washington becomes the first African-American professional football player since 1933 when he is signed with the L.A. Rams in 1946. Washington was followed by another African-American player, Woody Strode. A year later, in 1947, Paul "Tank" Younger also signed with the L.A. Rams, making him the first African-American professional football player from an all-black college.
