Arena Football League
(American Conference - Western Division)
Owner: Casey Wasserman
Western Division Title: 2005
In April 2000,
the Los Angeles Avengers joined 17 other teams to kick off the Arena
Football
League's 13th season. Arena Football is a summer sport played
indoors on a padded surface
measuring 85 feet wide by 50 yards long. The
end zones are eight-yards. Rebound nets flanking
the goal posts measure 30-feet
wide by 32 feet high. The goal posts themselves are 9 feet wide
with a crossbar
at a height of 15 feet. Each team places eight players on the field at a time to
play
both offense and defense (except for two offensive and defensive
specialists).
The Avengers was not the first Arena Football team based in Los
Angeles. The Los Angeles Cobras
played one season in 1988 and ended with
a 5-7-1 win/loss/tie record. This team played the Chicago
Bruisers to the only
tie game in Arena Football League history (37-37). Neither team scored in seven
minutes of overtime.
