Biography of Cardinal Roger M. Mahony

Cardinal Roger M. Mahony was born on February 27, 1936, in North Hollywood, California, to Victor James and Loretta Marie (Baron) Mahony. The elder Mahony was an electrician. Young Roger Mahony attended Saint Charles School in North Hollywood and Los Angeles College (a prep seminary) and, later, Mission Hill's Queen of Angels Seminary. He went on to attend St. Johns Seminary in Camarillo and the National Catholic School of Social Science at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was ordained a priest on May 1, 1962, in the Fresno Diocese. In 1975, he was ordained as the Titular Bishop of Tamascani and Auxiliary Bishop of Fresno. On April 25, 1980, he was named Bishop of Stockton . Five years later, on May 16, 1985, he was named Archbishop of Los Angeles and was installed on September 5th. He became the first head of the Los Angeles Archdiocese to have actually been born in Los Angeles. On June 28, 1991, Roger M. Mahony was elevated to Cardinal, titular church, Four Crowned Saints.
