July 27, 1995 - Kenneth Schechter of La Canada, a Korean War navy pilot, receives the Distinguished Flying Cross 43 years after landing his damaged aircraft despite being blinded by an enemy anti-aircraft artillery shell. Schecter was "talked down" by a friend and fellow pilot. The Navy had apparently lost the paperwork submitted to award Schecter. U.S. Army Lieutenant Henry Lee, born in South Pasadena and graduate of Pomona College, survived the infamous World War II "Bataan Death March" to write his book of poetry Nothing but Praise. Lee died in action. Two service members killed in action during Operation Restore Hope in Somalia were Chief Warrant Officer Raymond A. Frank, age 45, of Monrovia (killed October 3, 1993) and Sergeant Cornell Houston, age 31, of Compton (killed October 7, 1993). U.S. Army Sergeant Andrew Ramirez, who grew up in East Los Angeles and attended Schurr High School in Montebello, and two other U.S. soldiers were taken into captivity when Serbian soldiers near the Macedonia border ambushed their patrol. Their 32-day captivity ended after a religious delegation led by the Rev. Jesse Jackson successfully negotiated for their release.
