KZLA (FM 93.9) was formerly billed
"America's most listened to country station." That ended, however, in 2006, when
the station's parent company decided that country was not the most lucrative format for
ethnically mixed Los Angeles (this,
despite that Los Angeles is reported to be one of the top markets for country music CDs
and concerts). The station was
reformatted with contemporary R&B music and re-lettered KMVN, Movin' 93.9.
Spanish language radio
draws about a quarter of radio listeners in Los Angeles. In fact, according to
Arbitron, the leading
station in Los Angeles in 2007 is KLVE (FM 107.5), alone drawing about
five percent of the Los Angeles listening market.
February 28, 2003, was the final day of
broadcasting for one of the oldest radio stations in Los Angeles. KFSG
ceased
broadcasting religious talk and music format to make way for a Spanish language music
format. The station had earlier sold
its 96.3 FM slot for another Spanish language station and moved to 93.5 FM. Founded by
the famed and flamboyant
evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, KFSG first went on the air on February 6, 1924.
McPherson earlier founded Angelus
Temple, LIFE Bible College, and the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel (KFSG
breaking out to K-Four Square
Gospel). She was the first woman to preach by radio.
Larry Mantle has hosted the radio talk program
AirTalk (FM 89.3), continuously since March 1985. It is the longest
continuously running daily talk program in Southern California. Although talk
hosts Michael Jackson (not the singer) and
Ira Fistell had been hosting radio talk programs prior to 1985, there had been times they
did not do so daily.
About 83 percent of persons surveyed in 2001 in the
Greater Los Angeles Area listened to a radio on any particular day
whereas about half read a newspaper. The average radio listener in Los Angeles, age
18+, spends 3.5 hours each day listening
to radio (Source: Center for Media Research, Media Audit, and Arbitron Lifestyles
Survey).
