In February 2008, MediaNews Group, owner of several Los Angeles area daily newspapers, announced a cost-cutting move
to merge operations of the Long Beach Press-Telegram and the Daily Breeze. Although both papers would continue
to be published as separate editions, several senior staff jobs and the entire copy desk at the Press-Telegram were eliminated
and control was transferred to the Daily Breeze offices. The Press-Telegram news office, however, remained in Long Beach.

The Los Angeles Times has the second highest circulation in the nation, just behind the New York Times. It boasts a
Sunday circulation of 1.2 million (versus 1.6 million for the New York paper).

Rafu Shimpo is the largest Japanese American daily newspaper.

The venerable dailies San Pedro News Pilot and Santa Monica Outlook were shut down by their owner, Copley Newspapers,
in 1998. In closing the Outlook, Monday, March 16, 1998, was the first day in almost 125 years in which Santa Monica did not
have a local newspaper. The San Pedro News Pilot began publishing 97 years prior.

In 1927, William Forbes, later publisher of the national business magazine Forbes, served as Editor-in-Chief of UCLA's Daily Bruin.
