Lack of Health Insurance in Los Angeles County

Approximately 2.7 million people in Los Angeles County (or about 28% of the population) have no health insurance. It is the third highest uninsured rate of 85 metropolitan areas in the nation. About 31% of all Los Angeles County residents age 64 or less are uninsured.  Two million of Los Angeles County uninsured persons are adults, ages 18 to 64 (about 34% of the county adult population).

No health insurance:

  • 31% of non-elderly (age 0-64) Los Angeles County residents
  • 40% of non-elderly (age 0-64) City of Los Angeles residents
  • 37% of City of Los Angeles residents age 0-18
  • 20% of Los Angeles County residents (except City of Los Angeles)
  • 41% of City of Los Angeles residents age 0-18
  • 29% of Los Angeles County residents (except City of Los Angeles)
  • 35% of City of Los Angeles adults and children in full-time, year-round employee families
  • 21% of Los Angeles County (except City of Los Angeles) adults and children in full-time, year-round employee families
  • 30% of employed Los Angeles County residents (as compared to 21% in all of California and 15% in the U.S.)
