Assembly Member Ted Lieu had served on the Torrance City Council and is a Major in the United States Air Force Reserves.

Assembly Member Mike Gordon (D) of the 53rd Assembly District was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly after his election in 2005 and, despite months of treatment, died on June 25, 2005. Ted Lieu won a September 2005 special election to fill the vacant seat.
