Assemblymember Mervyn M. Dymally (D)
Assemblymember Mervyn Dymally was first elected to the California Assembly in 1962. In 1966, he became the first African American to serve in the California State Senate. In 1974, he again made history when he was elected become California's first African-American Lieutenant Governor. In 1980, he achieved yet another first when he was elected to Congress from South Los Angeles County, becoming the first foreign-born African-American to serve in the U. S. Congress.
