Senator Sheila J. Kuehl (D) - Los Angeles
Sheila Kuehl served for six years in the State Assembly, prior to her election to the California State Senate. During the 1997-98 Assembly legislative session, she was the first woman in California history to be named Speaker pro Tempore of the Assembly. She is also the first openly gay or lesbian person to be elected to the California Legislature. Sheila Kuehl was the second woman in Harvard Law School's history to win the Moot Court competition. In her youth, Sheila Kuehl was known as the irrepressible Zelda Gilroy of the television series, "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." Return to California State Senators Representing L.A. County
