Prior to his election to the State Senate, George Runner served in the State Assembly from 1996 to 2002. He is married to Assemblywoman Sharon Runner who represents the 36th Assembly District, a seat he previously filled. The Runners are the first married couple in California history to serve concurrently in the state legislature.
