The City of Los Angeles Fire Department was founded in 1871.
In 2002, the Cities of Commerce agreed to contract with the City of Montebello for the services of the
Montebello Fire Department. For the first time in Los Angeles County, a city agreed to contract with a fire
department from a neighboring city. Up until that time, Commerce had contracted with the Los Angeles County
Fire Department. This move, however, was quickly challenged in court by the Los Angeles County Firefighters
Union. The union charged that the two cities are unable to share fire services without prior permission of the
Local Agency Formation Commission of Los Angeles County (LAFCO). Requests to LAFCO by Commerce
and Montebello for approval were subsequently denied. After years of expensive litigation costs, both cities finally
agreed in October 2004 to break off the deal.
In 2005, the City of La Habra, a city in Orange County, disbanded their own city department to contract with
the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the first city outside of Los Angeles County to contract with Los
Angeles County for fire services.
