Own Dogs, Cats or Birds
Los Angeles County
Note: Estimates below are based upon a formula developed by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
National
averages derived from AVMA surveys in 2001, estimated that, in 2001, 36.1% of
American households owned a pet dog, 31.6% own
a pet cat and 4.6% own a pet bird. These percentages were then calculated against household statistics from the 2000 U.S.
Census
for Los Angeles County. These are, of course, estimates with an unknown margin of
error, not accounting for demographic factors
such as household ethnic backgrounds, ages, homeownership, or presence of small
children - all factors which may effect the actual
number (see Characteristics of Dog & Cat-Owning Households in
the City of Los Angeles).
