For Fall 2000, Mount San Antonio College recorded the highest enrollment of any community college in California (33,068), more than any other higher educational institution in California except for UCLA. The ranking California community colleges after this were Santa Rosa Junior College (32,735) and Santa Monica College (31,071). East Los Angeles College ranked seventh in the state for enrollment (28,527) and third in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles Trade Technical College is the oldest of the nine public two-year colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. It was founded in 1925 as the Frank Wiggins Trade School.

The Rio Hondo College Fitness Center program, founded by instructor Ken Bos, is perhaps the largest for-credit college fitness program in California and possibly the nation. The program that includes fitness tests and comprehensive, yet flexible workout routines, boasts fall and spring enrollments of 2,200 students and 1,250 in the summer. The Fitness Center itself, featuring 6,000 square feet of floor space, averages about 400 users each day of the week.
