For Fall 2000, UCLA ranked first among California universities for the number of enrolled students (36,890), followed
by San Diego State (31,609), UC Berkeley (31,277), Cal State Long Beach (30,918), USC (29,914) and Cal State
Northridge
(29,066).

The 2001 U.S. News & World Report annual college ranking put Pomona College at 5th place among the top 50 liberal
arts colleges in the nation. Locally, only Claremont Colleges made the top 50 list. These were Harvey Mudd College
ranked 14th, Claremont McKenna College ranked 17th and Scripps College ranked 33rd.

Whittier College was founded in 1887 by members of the Society of Friends (Quakers).

The University of Southern California is a private research university of international distinction, and as such, the oldest
in the Western United States. The university attracts students from all 50 states and 107 other countries.

California Institute of the Arts was founded in 1961 with the help of Walt and Roy Disney and Lulu May Von Hagen.
It merged the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music (founded 1883) and Chouinard Art Institute (founded 1921).

The Immaculate Heart College, founded in 1906, closed in 1980.

UCLA is the only campus among the nation's top 10 research universities that was established in the 20th century.

UCLA is the largest (per enrollment) of the University of California Campuses.

USC has the second largest enrollment of foreign students in the nation.

California Graduate Institute is the first independent graduate school of psychology in the country, founded in 1968

The 2001 U.S. News & World Report annual college ranking put Pomona College at 5th place among the best liberal
arts colleges in the nation.

In 2000, U.S. News & World Report ranked California State University Long Beach eighth in the nation for the
number of transfer students (2,899).

In 2000, California Institute of Technology admitted only 13% of all student applicants. At the other end of the scale,

In 2000, the colleges in Los Angeles County with the highest percentages of students living on-campus are all Claremont
Colleges -- Harvard Mudd College at 96% and Claremont McKenna and Pomona Colleges each at 95%.

In 2000, the two Los Angeles County colleges where doctoral graduates are most likely to carry debt loads are
Biola University (77% - average debt load $23,952), Pepperdine University (64% - average debt load $29,533)
and USC (53% -average debt load $18,663). Pepperdine University doctoral graduates carry the second heaviest

In 2000, 82% of students who received bachelor degrees at Whittier College graduated with a debt load. The average
load was $22,847. At Pitzer College, the percentage of indebted graduates followed at 65% with an average debt load

In 2000, Whittier College was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the second most diverse liberal arts campus
in the nation with 30% of its student body being Hispanic.

In 2006, the Institute of Computer Technology was renamed LA College International.
