DROPOUT RATE FORMULAS
1 Year Rate Formula:
(Grades 9-12 Dropouts divided by Grades 9-12 Enrollment)*100
The 1-year dropout rate is the percent of dropouts during a single year,
calculated from actual data submitted. It is also called the
"annual" or "event" rate and it is the dropout rate used
by the National Center for Education Statistics to compare states and school
districts.
4 Year Derived Rate Formula:
(1 minus ((1-(dropouts from grade 9 divided by enrollment in grade 9))
multiplied by (1-(dropouts from grade 10/enrollment in grade 10)) multiplied
by (1-(dropouts from grade 11/enrollment in grade 11)) multiplied by
(1-(dropouts from grade 12/enrollment in grade 12)))) multiplied by 100
The 4-year derived dropout rate is an estimate of the percent of students
who would drop out during a four-year period, based on data collected for a
single year. To create an actual 4-year rate, we would need to collect
individual student data and be able to track such data over time.
