Founded in 1946 with six officers and a sergeant, the Los Angeles Airport Police have provided law enforcement services to the airports of the City of Los Angeles. In addition to patrol units, the department deploys a K-9 unit, crime scene investigation unit, special response unit, emergency services unit, and motorcycle unit. Airport officers are California peace officers and are trained at local police academies. The agency, however, is independent of the Los Angeles Police Department. Although it is actually a division of the Los Angeles Department of Airports, it is the the fourth largest law enforcement agency in Los Angeles County.
