Auto Theft in Los Angeles County, National Rank, & Theft Rate
* Among 360 U.S. Metropolitan Areas
In 2005, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Los Angeles ranked 22nd among U.S. cities for the highest auto theft rate in the nation, ranking behind Las Vegas, Phoenix, Seattle, Tucson, Detroit, Denver, Abuquerque and Honolulu. The Los Angeles metro area further had a lower auto theft rate than other California metro areas such as Modesto, Stockton, Visalia, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, San Francisco-Oakland, Riverside-San Bernardino, Bakersfield, El Centro and Vallejo-Fairfield. Because of its shear size, however, the L.A. metro area reported the highest number of stolen vehicles (86,564) of any U.S. metro area, easily dwarfing the next ranking metro area for number of stolen vehicles - New York Area (47,949). According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, California leads the nation in the number of reported motorcycle thefts. In 2005, California reported 9,110 stolen motorcycles. Florida followed with only about two-thirds that number at 6,324 reported thefts.
