Founded in 1887 on part of Rancho de la Centinela owned by Daniel Freeman. Freeman wanted to name it Centinela, but he sold it to a development company. It is said that the area was then named by a visitor from Inglewood, Canada, who was a sister-in-law of N.R. Vail, one of the promoters.
