The
first mural in Los Angeles was Juan Antonio’s The Fourteen
Stations of the Cross, painted in 1806 at the San Fernando
Mission.
Environmental
marine artist Wyland completed the 122,000 square foot mural "Planet
Ocean" on the Long Beach Arena in 1992. For three years, the mural,
featuring life-sized images of gray whales and dolphins, was the largest in the
world. It was bested in size in 1995 by Colorados Levee Project mural at
almost 180,000 square feet.
The Great Wall of Los
Angeles is a half mile-long mural painted on one of the concrete sides
of the Tujunga Wash portraying the history of California from the perspective of women and people of color.
