Copies of court documents - including orders regarding dissolutions of marriage and judgments of dissolutions, probate, wills, name changes, criminal and civil cases - are available at the court in which the matter was handled, or at the Los Angeles County Superior Court Archives if it is an older record. You should check with the court - see Superior Courts for a listing of the courts or go to http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org -- to determine where the file is stored.

For the Stanley Mosk (Central) Court, you may visit or write the certification section regarding civil cases in Rm. 112 at the Los Angeles County Courthouse, 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles or call (213) 974-5171 for information.

Criminal cases from all courts (felony cases 1973-present and misdemeanor case records 1988-present;  some misdemeanor indexes go back to 1983) and some civil case records from the Central Court (only general jurisdiction civil cases from the Stanley Mosk Courthouse) dated from 1997 may be ordered online for a fee.  See  http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org/OnlineServices/criminalindex/ for criminal cases and http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org/OnlineServices/CivilImages/ for civil cases at the Stanley Mosk (Central) Courthouse.

To order older documents (since 1880) from the County Records Center/Archives, you may order some documents online through LA E Court Online (see Court Document Order System).  At last check, only Family Law Divorce Judgments from older cases were available through this system, although additional document types are expected to be available in the future. Click here to see what cases are available from the Archives before you proceed.  If you do not have Internet access, it may be helpful to first listen to the recording at (213) 974-3581.  For non-online access to archived documents:

--You may view all court files in person at the Archives, 222 N. Hill St., Rm. 212, Los Angeles, Monday through Friday, except court holidays. Hours are 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m.

Original records of cases filed in the Los Angeles County Court and District Court prior to the year 1880 are stored at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.
