Named by the Gaspar de Portola expedition upon their arrival there in 1770 on the feast day of Saint Monica, mother of Saint Augustine. The name was later applied to two land grants encompassing the area, Boca de Santa Monica and San Vicente y Santa Monica. Senator John P. Jones of Nevada and Colonel Robert S. Baker founded the town in 1875.
